Advice
My first
suggestion to improve Baruch with new media is to create an account on a widely
used platform to quickly and consistently update students on campus events.
Baruch has social media accounts, but they are mainly targeted at potential
students and not current ones. The first account that comes to mind is a
Twitter account because it is quick, simple, and people can view tweets without
a Twitter account. The college already has multiple Twitter accounts. The
multiple accounts targeting potential students could be streamlined into either
one or two accounts to make it easier to manage and for others to find
information without having to hop from one account to the next. Then one
account could be made for announcements for current students. So, if the college,
or a particular building closes due to elevators etc. students would be notified
immediately. Often announcements are made through email which students check
only once a day.
As
mentioned in my post about Blogs vs. Wikis, I think implementing Wikis could
help students since it would be easy to find topics that normally get lost in
group chats.
Also, with
big closures such as the current one with COVID-19, the college could use new media
to keep students engaged in student life and to offer those graduating a chance
to enjoy their last semester. The clubs I am in have resorted to Zoom calls and
for graduation Dean’s Scholars have been offered a Zoom ceremony. I think it
would be interesting to see some sort of virtual world set up for club hours
where students could visit different clubs like they would usually do in
person.
